Abstract:  Metalize plastic mulches can improve light interception into orchards by reflecting the otherwise wasted light from the ground back to the tree canopies. The response of fruit trees to the additional reflected light is expected to depend on parameters such as plant species, climatic conditions, nutrition management etc. We will report on studies of light quality and microclimate in mulched orchards, as well as on the effects of the reflective muches on several fruit trees. These include improvements of the red coloration and sugar content in 'Kiett' mango fruits, advanced maturation of early peach varieties, and improved quality of red wine grapes. Negative results obtained in polyethylene-covered peach orchards, and Deglet Noor dates will also be discussed.
