AbstractThe effect of black and clear plastic mulch on the upper soil temperature and the surface air temperature, and its relation to the growth and yield of muskmelon was evaluated. The soil temperature was measured at a soil depth of 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 cm using copper-constantan thermocouples, while the air temperature was measured at 5 and 10 cm above the bed surface using fine wire chromel-constantan thermocouples. As a control, a treatment with no plastic mulch was included. The results of this study showed that the highest fruit yield is obtained with the black plastic mulch. It was also observed that the upper soil temperature and the air temperature was higher in the black and clear plastic mulch than in the control.
