This is a one-of-a-kind
opportunity to meet and learn from world-renowned
researchers and to gather feedback from extension
professionals and crop consultants about the application
of the technologies in production. For Plasticulture ‘06,
we’ve added a Growers Workshop, to expand interaction
with people using plastics in the field. And, for
the first time, the Congress been planned in conjunction
with the Irrigation Association’s International
Irrigation Show to help you make the best use
of your investment of time, travel and finances.
With many planned opportunities
for vital networking with researchers, extension faculty,
growers, and plastics manufacturers and distributors
from around the world there is certain to be an
explosion of ideas. Since 1961 the Congress has
truly served as the birthplace for hundreds of innovations
that use plastics to increase agricultural productivity
and profitability.
To further expand your horizons,
optional tours on Sunday will take you to nearby facilities
that use plasticulture in innovative ways in this arid
region.
Our host city has a reputation
for lively southwestern hospitality and our hotel is
close to many of San Antonio’s most famous attractions
such as La Villita, the Southwest School of Arts & Crafts,
El Mercado Mexican Market, the Institute of Texan Cultures,
and Mission Trail. Families will enjoy Six Flags Fiesta
Texas Amusement Park and Hemisfair Plaza.
We invite you to be
part of this unique gathering by contributing
to the scholarly discussions, exchange of information,
and innovative thought that takes place at each Congress. Experience
the diversity that is the hallmark of the American
Society for Plasticulture as presenters from
around the world join together at the Congress to
offer dozens of groundbreaking research reports.

Turf and
Landscape Tour
Texas experiences wide fluctuations
in rainfall making conservation a necessity for all
Texans. The turf and landscape industry is adopting
innovative irrigation management practices to conserve
water and reach the goals of the San Antonio Water
Conservation Ordinance. Important provisions of the
Ordinance reflect an agreement with the Greater San
Antonio Builders Association that all landscapes
on new homes built after January 1, 2006 will be
low water-use landscapes. This is defined by at least
four inches of soil under all turfgrass, irrigation
zoned by plant type, and in 2007 all lawn grasses
used must be capable of surviving 60 days of drought.
TOUR STOPS:
We will view a current
project evaluating 60-day drought survival of turfgrass
species and cultivars located on a turf farm operated
by Bladerunner Farms. Headquartered just south of
San Antonio in Poteet, Bladerunner
Farms is dedicated
to innovation and excellence in developing new hardier,
low maintenance "environmentally friendly" turfgrasses.
The farm's irrigation system and water conservation
measures will be highlighted on the tour.
Air conditioning
units and cooling tower blowdown are sources of irrigation
water in dry climates. San Antonio is one of the
most water conservation-wise cities in the nation.
A visit to the San Antonio Water
System (SAWS) main
office will feature a landscape maintained with captured
water. SAWS has incorporated many conservation projects
into its planning. Learn how these projects maximize
water use in the area.
The San Antonio
Botanical Garden is planning to install an up-to-date irrigation
system for water conservation. After a tour of the
current irrigation system, there will be free time
to enjoy the garden before the bus returns to the
Convention Center. The garden was founded in 1980
and covers 33 acres in the center of the city. It
is recognized for the creative use of drought tolerant
native plants. Three specially constructed areas
are designed and planted to represent the east Texas
piney woods, the Texas hill country, and the southwest
Texas plains.
|
Agricultural
Tour
San Antonio is one of the most rapidly growing
areas in Texas. In addition to its role in business
and commerce, the San Antonio area is still heavily
agricultural with cattle, field crops, nursery/floral
crops, and vegetables the principle commodities.
TOUR STOPS:
Color Spot Nurseries is one of the largest
national ornamentals producers with 12 major locations
in three western and southwestern states. Color Spot’s
San Antonio production facility is the largest with
over 587 acres in primarily container production.
The nursery grows bedding plants, flowering potted
plants, perennials, shrubs, trees and groundcovers.
Wells provide water for this facility.
Peterson Bros.
Wholesale, Inc. serves primarily retail markets in
a 300-mile radius of San Antonio with vegetables,
bedding plants, ground covers and poinsettias. The
nursery uses more Jiffy Pots than anyone else in
the nation. Production is under poly and Cravo houses
with Cravo shade and heat retention. Water is purchased
from the City of San Antonio making water conservation
a necessity. Other points of interest include soil
pasteurization, blending of their own water-soluble
fertilizer, and the production of plant containers
using 5 different molds.
Water Garden Gems, Inc., Marion, TX produces water plants and koi to meet
the growing demand for residential and commercial
installations of popular ponds and water gardens.
Plastics are essential in the production of water
plants and fish.
Mortellaro's Nursery, Inc. in Shertz,
TX began as a backyard nursery and now has 50 acres
of trees, shrubs, ground covers, native plants and
seasonal plants for landscape use. Mortellaro's is
located near a sewage treatment plant and uses treated
water for irrigation. In addition nursery run off
water is captured in two plastic lined ponds and
reused for irrigation. They have large display gardens
surrounding the office with a sample of all their
available plant material.
Demonstrations of plastic
mulch and drip for vegetable production will be seen
on a local farm. |
These tours
are not part of the Congress registration. Tickets must be purchased in
advance so that arrangements can be made for buses and
meals. Space will be limited by bus availability. The fee
includes transportation, all tour stops, and lunch. Tickets
may be purchased by people who are not registered for the
Congress and are available on a first come/first served
basis.Tour buses will leave the Convention Center promptly
at 8:30 am. Breakfast is on your own prior to departure.
